The essentials

What is Pistonbook?

A free maintenance log and budget app for cars and motorcycles: servicing and reminders, mileage, fill-ups and costs, documents, invoice scanning. It is built in France by an independent developer, with no required account, and your data stays encrypted on your phone.

Is there a free app to track my car's maintenance?

Pistonbook is a free Android maintenance log app: services with parts and labour, reminders by date or mileage, a mileage curve, running costs and vehicle documents. Vehicles, entries and invoice scans are unlimited in the free version.

Is Pistonbook really free?

Everything that runs on the phone is free and will stay free, with no limit on vehicles or entries, and nothing intrusive. A Premium plan will come later, at a token price (under €2 a month), only for what costs a server: sync between devices and the web version. Sync is free for life for beta users, with an account created before the beta ends. See pricing.

Is the app in English?

Yes. Pistonbook follows your phone's language, and you can also choose English or French in Settings. Units and currency follow your country: miles, mpg and pounds in the UK, miles, US gallons and dollars in the US.

Which phones does Pistonbook run on?

On Android (version 8 or later), in beta on the Google Play Store, open to everyone. The web version works in a computer's browser, and installs on an iPhone's home screen from Safari, until there is an App Store app.

How do I install the beta?

In three steps with your Google account: join the testers group, accept to become a tester, then install the app from the Play Store. Everything is explained on the Join the beta page.

How do I prove my vehicle's service history when selling?

Each job is dated, priced and tied to the mileage, with its scanned invoices. Pistonbook produces a PDF service history to send to the buyer.

Data, account and backup

Is my data safe? Do I need an account?

No account is needed. An optional account, with your email address, lets you get the online backup back without the code. All your data stays on the phone, encrypted, with keys kept in the device's secure vault. The online backup, if you turn it on, is encrypted before it leaves and the server cannot read it. Neither your number plate, your VIN nor your name is sent.

What if I lose or change my phone?

Turn on the online backup: an encrypted copy of your logbook is sent at most once a day, and a recovery code is shown to you once. On the new phone, enter that code and everything comes back, or sign in with your account. The server cannot read the backup, and without the code nobody can. A file backup, encrypted with a password, is also possible.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, Account tab, "Delete account", then your password. Your devices are signed out straight away and the account is erased 30 days later. Without the phone, see Delete your account.

Motorcycles, track days and uses

Which app should I use for my motorcycle's maintenance?

Pistonbook handles motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and three-wheelers as well as cars, with what is specific to them: chain lubing and tensioning logged in one tap, front and rear tyres tracked separately, winter storage and rider gear. See motorcycles in Pistonbook.

How do I track the maintenance of a track car or bike?

Choose the "Road and track" or "Track only" use. Reminders are then also counted in track days (oil, brake fluid, tyres), each day is logged in one tap, and its price goes into the budget. See Track days and drifting.

Are electric and hybrid cars supported?

Yes, natively: charges with their type and connector, consumption in kWh, electric cost per mile. Plug-in hybrids have both fill-ups and charges.

Imports from other apps

How do I switch from Fuelio to Pistonbook?

In Fuelio, make a backup (.zip file) or export a vehicle as CSV, then pick that file in Pistonbook (Settings, Import from another app). The vehicle, fill-ups, services, costs, income and active reminders come across. GPS positions and photos are not imported.

Can I import from several apps, and undo an import?

Yes. Each import adds to the logbook without duplicates: what is already there is recognised, and a cost that looks like an existing entry is shown to you before being added. Each import can then be undone from Settings, Backup and data, Imports.
